# Get a database for free, no account needed

`pxt new` gives you or your agent a hosted Pixeltable database with tables, storage and HTTP services, yours to keep if you claim it within 48 hours.

```sh
pip install -U 'pixeltable[serve]'
pxt new
```

## What it prints

Example values:

```text
$ pxt new
Created a free Pixeltable Cloud trial: organization trial-x7k2, with database main.
  pxt://trial-x7k2:main
Claim it at https://www.pixeltable.com/claim?org=trial-x7k2#token=…, or it is deleted at 2026-10-01T15:22:42Z.
Anyone with this link can claim the organization.
Point a project at it in pixeltable.toml (`pxt init` writes the file):
  [[pixeltable.database]]
  name = 'pxt://trial-x7k2:main'
Then run:
  pxt db update pxt://trial-x7k2:main
  pxt schema update app.py pxt://trial-x7k2:main
  pxt service update app.py pxt://trial-x7k2:main
```

## How it works

1. **Get one.** `pxt new`: It prints the database URI and a claim link, and later `pxt` commands on that machine use the new database.
2. **Build.** `pxt service update app.py pxt://trial-x7k2:main`: Your agent writes `app.py`, names the database in `pixeltable.toml` as `pxt new` shows, and runs `pxt db update`, `pxt schema update` and `pxt service update`. The last one prints the service URL.
3. **Keep it.** `pixeltable.com/claim`: Open the claim link and sign in or sign up within 48 hours. The organization becomes yours, with the same data, services and URLs.

## Limits until you claim it

- Database: 1
- Services: 2
- Storage: 50 GB
- Each worker: 1 CPU, 2 GiB
- Time to claim: 48 hours

Until it is claimed, each database and service runs on 1 worker with up to 1 CPU, 2 GiB of memory and 10 GB of disk, its pods reach the internet on ports 80, 443 and 5432 only, and services answer only requests that carry its key. Once claimed, the Community plan's limits apply.

## For agents

Paste this into Claude Code, Codex or Cursor:

> Get yourself a Pixeltable database with `pxt new` (`pip install -U 'pixeltable[serve]'` first). It is free and needs no account. Build there (https://pixeltable.com/llms.txt shows how), then send me the service URL and the claim link.

No Python? Step 6 of https://pixeltable.com/auth.md gets the same database with curl.

## Questions

### Do I need an account?

No. `pxt new` creates an organization with one database, `main`, and keeps its key on your machine for later `pxt` commands. You sign in or sign up only to claim it.

### How long does it last?

Unclaimed, it is deleted 48 hours after it was created, with everything in it. `pxt whoami` shows when. Claim it before then to keep it.

### What happens when I claim it?

You sign in or sign up and become the organization's admin. Its data, services and URLs stay as they are, the Community plan's limits replace the ones above, and you choose whether your agent's key keeps working.

### Who can claim it?

Anyone with the link, so send it only to the person who should own it. `pxt new` prints it once, when it creates the database, and `pxt logout` prints it once more.

### What can I build on it?

Whatever one `app.py` declares, within the limits above: tables, computed columns, embedding indexes, media, and the HTTP services that serve them.

### Is it really free?

Yes: no account, no card and nothing to cancel. Unclaimed, it is deleted; claimed, it is on the free Community plan until you upgrade it.
